On the 26th and 27th of February SILKNOW held its second meeting in Bled, Slovenia. It was hosted by JSI. In order to open the session, SILKNOW held a workshop with its EEAB, where the project was presented demonstrating the importance of protecting silk heritage for Europeans citizens. Also, it was a great opportunity to show the highlights of SILKNOW such as the thesaurus or the Virtual Loom.
Members of the EAB present during this workshop: Marie-Véronique Leroi (French Minister of Culture and Communication), Oscar Corcho (Universidad Politécnica de Madrid), Pierre Guérin (Generalitat Valenciana), Sílvia Saladrigas (CDMT Terrassa), Marco Rendina (European Fashion Heritage Association), Ana Cabrera (Museo del Traje, Madrid) For two days the project members showed the progress made in each work package, demonstrating the ability to operate in an interdisciplinary environment. Likewise, SILKNOW began to prepare the project review that will take place in June in Madrid.

On the 17th of November SILKNOW had the opportunity to present SILKNOW at the event “Café con Proyectos” organized by EUROIMPULSE. This event served as platform for exchanging ideas on how several initiatives, like SILKNOW, could contribute to preserve cultural heritage in their cities and Europe. It was also a time for generate ideas and synergies among these projects.
Organized by the European Commission, the ‘Fair of European Innovators in Cultural Heritage’ took place on 15-16 November 2018 in Brussels and was focused on the next steps and contributions to the EU Action Plan on Cultural Heritage. They showcased the latest innovations in cultural heritage, especially in the scope of EU funded projects, discussing why they are developed and how they can benefit both the society and the market. The fair promoted stronger ties between R&I, policies and arts by contributing opening cultural heritage innovation ecosystem in Europe and beyond.
For SILKNOW, it was an excellent occasion to meet a variety of stakeholders and coordinators of other funded EU projects under H2020 or even FP7, participating in fostering creativity and connections across Europe. Through the presentations, panel discussions, project booths and B2B networking sessions, we were able to see the latest innovations in cultural heritage and we could engage with other researchers, policy makers, artists, start-ups, and EU representatives.
SILKNOW presented the project at the Europe for Culture workshop on the 14th November 2018. This workshop was co-organized by three DGs: DG CONNECT, represented by Scientific Officer Albert Gauthier, DG for Education, Youth, Sport and Culture, represented by Policy Officer Erminia Sciacchitano, and DG RTD, represented by Policy Officer Laura Hetel. In representation of a worldwide institution, Project Officer (Culture, UNESCO) Oriol Freixa Matalonga was also present. There, we had the chance to discuss how are we promoting conservation and understanding of silk heritage by applying next-generation ICT research. We discussed and learnt about the common challenges for H2020 Cultural Heritage projects in terms of exploitation of project results and IPR management and reusability of cultural content in research.
Textile thesauri
We’re preparing a multilingual thesaurus specialized in historical silk. In order to obtain better results, we are going to analyze the international state of the art of textile thesauri. By filling-up this survey you will contribute to establish common points to enhance access and preservation of silk heritage.

On the 10th and 11th of September, SILKNOW held its second meeting in Lyon, France. It was hosted by CNRS-LARHRA, a project member, at the Maison des sciences de l’Homme Lyon.
The meeting was attended by leading institutions of the Lyon textile world, such as the Musée d’Art et d’Industrie Saint-Etienne, the Musée des Tissus de Lyon, the Musée de Bourgoin Jailleu and the Denis & fils SAS or the the Tissages Perrin . The Service Patrimoines et Inventaire général- Direction de la culture et du patrimoine- Région ARA, the President of the Commission Qualité et Technique d’Intersoie France and the Director of the Instituto Cervantes center in Lyon were also present at the meeting.
From the 5th to 9th of September, SILKNOW went to Algemesí, Spain in order to present the project on a stand at the local Exhibition Room. This was an excellent opportunity to show how SILKNOW will preserve the intangible heritage associated with traditional weaving techniques at the 2018 ICCN General Assembly.
